The Ichthyosaur Puppet Project is a life-size replica of Nevada’s State Fossil, the ichthyosaur species Shonisaurus popularis. The skeleton is made entirely from laminated plywood, cut to shape then shaped and rounded.
The Ichthyosaur Puppet Project was installed in 2013 at the Burning Man Festival. In that incarnation, it was installed as a marionette that could be manipulated by the participants. The Ichthyosaur skeleton is now installed permanently at the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum in Reno, Nevada. Because of the practical considerations involved with permanent installation, the Ichthyosaur is installed as a static sculpture rather than as a puppet.
